A month of Nova | Family Documentary Photography

family-documentary-photography-shadowing-lights

In August I captured a little piece of Nova's daily shenanigans. What a great month. We saw the end of summer vacation, she watched her sister leave for 2nd grade and she got to see her first solar eclipse. We had lots of friend playdates and cousin sleepovers. She played hard and started her final year of preschool. A magical moment of holding new born kittens for the first time ever and panning for gold in the backyard.

Somedays it is so hard to pick up the camera, some days are crazy busy but, this is so worth it! At the end of the month seeing all these images come together is truly special. I love looking back at her sisters month  and honestly i waited too long to capture Nova's.

December is on its way, the birthday month for both my rad little ladies and with the holidays to celebrate…. I am picking up my camera again . Documenting each day of them together or apart, a month of sisters. I cant wait!!

30 Days of Indie

family documentry photography.jpg

To celebrate my new website and branding, i thought it was time to actually start blogging ... or rather journaling (that sound so much better and less scary to me) I have so much to catch up on, its quite ridiculous. With the new year and my little inward promise to myself to capture more of my own family, because honestly you really don't know what you missed until you look back on your own photographs and wish you had taken more...more ... more.  Memory fades, this cant be helped. These photographs and little images of time help me remember, even down to the weather and the smells. So, my first blog/journal on my new site is of a project i got involved with last year. One month of daily documentary photography. This is Indies month from May 2016. She was toothless, it was adorable those teeth have already grown in. it feels like yesterday. Time moves so fast for these little ones as we go about our daily adult lives.

Indie + Nova :: Birthday Portraits | California Photographer

double
double

I had the greatest intentions to send out holiday cards this year, really i did! (this seems to be a bad trend i am setting up for our family) We were set for a family session with the lovely Star thrower photography down here in Southern Cali when my husbands work schedule changed and to top it off the girls we getting more sick as the days went buy. When the sickness passed i knew i had to get my butt in gear and at least capture the girls birthday portraits. If some gf you don't know, i didn't plan there birthday months to well and they are 4 days a part ... both in December. (crazy, crazy month/s)  i am so glad we got out for these, i truly have been slacking with family pictures and how can i even begin to preach about the importance of documentation when i can't even do it for myself! REALLY!

Let me tell you a little bit about these wonderful girls. Indie has had a fantastic year as we traveled back and forth to northern cali for weddings, seeing her gramma, uncles, aunts and cousins. She has grown so much in the last year and it still surprises me  how well her understanding of things are. Indie is really soft hearted, sensitive and becoming more like a clown as the days go by. She is also getting more and more feisty ..... but i hear this is standard practice for girls.  Our favorite line this year .... and its hard to top last years "i can't see my eyes!" is " two five minutes"  as she tries to lengthen time. It has been a year of new friends ..... purple and Cinderella. Thank you Indie for bringing so much light into our lives.

Nova, moves so fast we cannot keep up. This little monkey was pulling herself up before she could sit up and took her first steps at 9 months and was practically running at 10 months. She will climb on anything and is fearless. Nova will kiss anything she understands or does not understand. Unfortunately she is also a hair puller and pincher but lets you know that it is going to hurt by yelling OOooooooowwwwwwwwww as she pinches or pulls. Novas first word and sign was "bite" (as in for food) She says NO like a champ (aargh) and our favorite thing she says is "LETS GO!!"  The kisses, did i mention the kisses! this is the sweetest thing. Nova, thank you for bringing so much joy into our lives.

I hope everyone is enjoying their last minute shopping. Mine is complete! Now for mounds of wrapping paper and tape. If i don't post before xmas, Happy holidays to everyone!

It seems the only thing better that one is two. I am totally in love with our baby girls. Seeing them together, i feel more complete than i ever thought i could. At 6 weeks old Nova has already put her print firm within our family and we are enjoying every moment. I am filling with so much gratitude for this beautiful life which is taking shape around me.

Most of you know our second little girl arrived in December, i have already shared (bragged)a couple of her images on my Facebook page :) . Since i share so many precious moments of my client, i felt i would love to share this moment with you all. Having a home birth was very important to us for many reasons and i feel so blessed to say we had a very successful home birth. Nova entered the world at 1:50am on 12.11.12 weighing 8.8lbs pink and beautiful. We had just celebrated Indies birthday on the 7th and my mothers on the 10th and the happy birthday banner happened to stay there for Nova. Indie was there to witness the birth of her sister and was so excited i wish i had video just to capture her excitement. The whole experience was life changing and i feel stronger today than ever before. My mom was able to join us from South Africa which added the cherry to the top of this wonderful time. John was so strong and right by my side the whole time and he really was all i needed through some of the ruff moments which looking back seem so few. Words cannot even express the joy we feel to have two such amazing girls, i am in awe of my family everyday. A big thank you to my midwives for watching over this special time for our family. Victoria(Canary Lane Photography) I am so grateful we crossed paths! These images are a treasure and will be with my family for always through many generations.
