A Month with Nova | Documentary Family Photography & Capturing Kids' Milestones
In August, I captured a little piece of Nova's daily shenanigans—documenting the big and small moments that make up her world. What a great month it was! We saw the end of summer vacation, she watched her sister leave for 2nd grade, and she witnessed her very first solar eclipse. We enjoyed plenty of playdates with friends, cousin sleepovers, and those carefree summer days. Nova played hard and started her final year of preschool—a milestone that felt so bittersweet. Among the magic, she held newborn kittens for the first time and even tried panning for gold in the backyard.
As a family photographer, I know how hard it can be to pick up the camera some days. Life gets busy, and capturing those everyday moments can feel like just another thing on the list. But looking back at the end of the month and seeing all these images come together is truly special. These photos are like a little time capsule of her final summer before kindergarten, a glimpse into Nova’s world before it changes again.
I loved looking back at her sister’s month when I did this a few years ago, and honestly, I waited too long to start documenting Nova’s journey. These kids' milestones are so fleeting, and capturing their personalities through candid, everyday photos is something I cherish.
Now, with December on its way—the birthday month for both of my rad little ladies—and the holidays around the corner, I’m picking up my camera again. This time, I’ll be documenting each day, capturing the magic of sisters, whether they’re playing together or exploring their worlds on their own. A month of sisterhood, memories, and everyday magic—I can’t wait!
