Indie's Month of Memories | Documentary Family Photography & Capturing Everyday Moments
To celebrate my new website and branding, I thought it was time to actually start blogging... or rather, journaling (that sounds so much better and less intimidating to me). I have so much to catch up on, it's quite ridiculous. With the new year and my little inward promise to myself to capture more of my own family, I realized how important these everyday moments are. Honestly, you don’t know what you’ve missed until you look back on your own photographs and wish you had taken more… more... more.
Memory fades; it’s just a part of life. But these photographs—these little images of time—help me remember, even down to the weather and the smells. So, my first blog/journal on my new site is of a project I took on last year: a month of daily documentary photography. This is Indie’s month from May 2016. She was toothless back then, and it was the most adorable phase—those new teeth have already grown in, but it feels like just yesterday.
Documenting this month was a way to capture Indie’s everyday life, from her playful adventures to those quiet, sweet moments. Time moves so fast for these little ones while we go about our daily adult lives, and I wanted to preserve these fleeting memories before they became just that—memories. These photos are a time capsule of a stage that has already passed, a reminder of how fast kids grow and change. This was also a very special month as she got to meet one of her South African cousins for the first time.
With this new commitment to capturing my own family through documentary family photography, I hope to keep documenting the little things that make up our days. After all, these everyday moments, like the gap-toothed smiles and spontaneous playtimes, are the ones that matter the most.
